'Dracula Untold' No. 1 movie on Friday: $8.9M

Amazing Amy has a new foe to reckon with this weekend. Universal and Legendarys Dracula Untold (Cinema Score: A-) edged out Gone Girl for the No. 1 spot, Friday. Starring Luke Evans as the classic bloodsucker, Dracula Untold took in around $8.9 million, Friday (including Thursday showings), while David Finchers Gone Girl earned an estimated $8.15 million. It could be a tight race to No. 1, but tracking suggests that Gone Girl may end up the victor with $26 or $27 million this weekend and a $3 million lead over Dracula.

Disneys Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, meanwhile, got off to a bit of a modest start with a $5.23 million Friday, but the PG-rated family pic starring Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner should pick up on Saturday and Sunday for a $20 million weekend. Audiences gave the $28 million pic an A- Cinema Score.

Finally, Robert Downey Jr.s The Judge (Cinema Score: A-) opened to a soft $4.4 million, Friday. The R-rated family drama, which cost a reported $50 million to produce, is likely suffering from a bit of market saturation (and lukewarm reviews) right now, but could experience a slow build in the coming weeks.

Also, the overall box office is up for the fourth weekend in a row, helping to reverse the fortunes of a down year. The top ten should net out around $125 million versus 2013s $103.4 million.

Outside of the top five, Lionsgates thriller Addicted took in an impressive $3 million from 800 theaters Friday. The R-rated film, starring Sharon Leal as an adulterous woman, cost under $5 million to produce and is already on track to beat expectations.

In limited release, The Weinstein Companys St. Vincent, starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy and produced by Chernin Entertainment, grossed an estimated $30.9K from 4 locations. Kill the Messenger and Whiplash also opened in select theaters this weekend, but Friday earnings were not available at press time.
