Horror movie A Cure for Wellness is using fake news to promote itself – Digital Spy

In a very cunning bit of marketing, horror movie A Cure for Wellness is using fake news websites for promotion.

According to BuzzFeed, there are five fake local news sites inserting promotional references to the film into fake news stories, as well as hosting ads for the film.

A spokesperson from one of the film's producers, Regency Enterprises, confirmed that they are working with the fake sites and provided a statement, which read: "A Cure for Wellness is a movie about a 'fake' cure that makes people sicker.

"As part of this campaign, a 'fake' wellness site healthandwellness.co was created and we partnered with a fake news creator to publish fake news."

20th Century Fox

The five fake news sites are the Sacramento Dispatch, Salt Lake City Guardian, Houston Leader, NY Morning Post, and Indianapolis Gazette - though they now all redirect to the film's official website.

Several of the sites ran a false story with the headline, 'Trump Depression Disorder Classified As A Disease By The American Medical Association'. The article even ended with a call to action which read: "tweet #cureforwellness to raise awareness of the growing epidemic."

Another fake article posted was about one man from Salt Lake City being left in a "catatonic state" after watching A Cure for Wellness.

Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski's upcoming horror movie A Cure for Wellness debuted a trailer during Super Bowl 51 and soured most viewers' seven-layer dip in the process.
