Sadly, unlike the vampires the show centres around, The Vampire Diaries is not immortal. While many would agree now is the time to lay the beloved CW show to rest for the final time, that doesn't make letting the world of Mystic Falls go any less painful; especially for the stars.
Some of the show's biggest stars, both those whose characters are long dead and those who have stayed until the bitter end, have written about their biggest, best and most emotional on screen moments to commemorate their time on the show. So, get your tissues at the ready, because this is gonna be a tear-jerking journey through memory lane!
Vicki Donovan has flitted in and out of the show since she became the first mortal to be turned into a vampire in season one and, understandably, her best memory comes from pressing her near naked bod into Ian Somerhalder.
"Theres an episode called 'Lost Girls' and my character, Vicki Donovan, is dancing with Ian Somerhalder and we are both high on blood and dont have a lot of clothing on. Especially for me at that time, I think I was 23 years old, and Ian had just come hot off of Lost, it was the sexiest thing Ive ever done in my entire life, especially on set."
While being killed off has to kind of suck, Susan Walters was just glad her characters end really made a splash:
"Obviously getting drowned was a big scene for me. And actually I was so lucky. I knew my death would be coming at some point. It was just kind of par for the course. I remember being so grateful that I had a private death, so it was just Joseph Morgan and myself."
Poor Sheriff Forbes had one of the most emotional death in Vampire Diaries history, but Marguerite MacIntyre can't help but thinking of all that could have been:
"Listen, I always thought, theres a world where this show ends [and] its just me and Matt at the Mystic Grill, were the only ones alive in the entire town being like, 'I dont know what just happened, but cheers.'"
It's almost impossible to mention Aunt Jenna without getting an emotional reaction from a Vampire Diaries fan and Sara Canning is thrilled that, even though she was so short lived, Jenna had a real impact:
"I feel very lucky to have played her. Its really nice to see that, even though she was only really around for two seasons, I think that she had some sort of lasting impact in the sense that her death really did affect particularly Elena and Jeremy and maybe Alaric too hopefully."
We might have met him as your run of the mill jock, but it is the wolfish moments that have stuck in Michael Trevino's mind:
"Ill always remember the first werewolf transformation, which happened in season 2, because for Tyler, he was in season 1, but we were introducing our main leads. So for me, things didnt really start clicking and moving aggressively, no pun intended, until season 2, and when it did, it had to be that first werewolf transformation just because we shot that over two days. It took two full days just to achieve that sequence."
Daniel Gillies has no idea such big things were in store for Elijah when he first appeared in The Vampire Diaries:
"Very little was described to me in the beginning. They didnt know what they wanted to do with Elijah. It was never anyones intention to make him Klaus brother. He was something of a mercenary or a hit man, and I think he was destined to be eliminated relatively early in the fabric of that narrative."

Letting his "James Bond" persona go is clearly going to be hard for Vampire Diaries veteran Michael Malarkey:
"Enzo is the closest to James Bond that Ive gotten so far. I suppose Ill miss being Bond-ish. He is kind of a mix between a Bond villain and Bond himself, which is a cool line to toe. It was my first major role doing a British accent, as well, which was a real treat."
Moving from a vacuous attention seeker to one of the most beloved characters in the show, most fans fell in love with Caroline's optimistic outlook and her ability to retain her humanity long after she had been turned:
"With her turning into a vampire, I thought that was such a fun and beautiful, defining arc for her. It was still so early on in the series that I just wanted to keep my job and I wanted the character to stay alive, even if that meant that she had to become dead to do so. "
The grossly underrated Bonnie Bennett has had one of the roughest rides of any of the Mystic Falls crew, but luckily these tough story arcs helped Kat Graham come to terms with some problems of her own:
"There are moments where I felt bizarre parallels between the character and my own journey. I learned a lot about myself playing her. The emotional scenes are never easy. The first scene that jolted me was the Grams death scene in season 1. Unfortunately, I had buried my real grandmother the day before. It was very traumatic. And usually any major loss on the show, I had dealt with something similar in my own personal life, sans the supernatural aspect of it.
I had some pretty big losses over the last two to three years. Being able to play a character like that through some of my darkest hours, it was my saving grace."
While we might all remember Damon's rippling abs and cheeky smirk more than anything else, Ian Somehalder wants to remind us that he also knew how to have a good time:
"Damon has had a very fun time for a very long time. Damons had a great run. Hes had a lot of great lines, hes had a lot of great scenes, theres been a lot to do, and I learned a lot. I learned a great deal playing this character and navigating the waters of being on a big global hit network series.
This experience made me become a man. It made me understand true social responsibility. It taught me how to operate in this business so that I can now go on and become a storyteller. I got to meet a lot of amazing people. Its given me the ability to work with great people and have a family here in Georgia. Those are amazing relationships. I love these relationships. Im almost a 40-year-old man. I started this show when I was 30. Pauls 34, Im 38. We became men. Thats cool."
Playing the more sensitive Salvatore brother has given Paul Wesley the opportunity to see what really matters in the show; relationships:
"I think the shows at its best when the stakes mean something. So I think seasons 1, 2, 3 were very real and all the consequences meant something. The shows best when its able to do that and when people really do die and when tragic things do occur and theres no going back. And I also think the shows at its best honestly when its about the relationship between the brothers. The shows really about brothers two brothers fighting over a girl but its really about two brothers and their relationship with each other and their story."
Although Nina Dobrev left the show what seems like decades ago, she will be returning for the final episode and finishing the story she began. When asked about playing Elena Gilbert back in May 2015, Dobrev said:
" I've literally grown up on this show. I was a baby when I started, and now I'm a woman. I feel like I've learned so much and have grown so much because of every single person, and every single character, and person I've worked with. They made me who I am, and I'm excited to apply that to the next chapter."
