What is it with people trying to make The Wizard of Oz 'dark'?

There's the nightmare-inducing sequel Return to Oz and its psychotic Wheelers, the hit musical Wicked, with its plotline of experimenting on all the animals and the allegories that come with it, NBC's 'adult' Emerald City and now... this.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that New Line Cinema has picked up a script about a horror film set in Oz from scriptwriter Mike Van Waes.

We know there's plenty of nightmare fuel to be mined from Frank L Baum's 1900 novel, where a girl and her dog are transported to a strange world terrorised by witches and flying monkeys and whatnot but... really?

Nothing can be scarier than the original 1939 classic from Metro Goldwyn Mayer, and that's all because of Margaret Hamilton.

Hamilton's portrayal of The Wicked Witch of the West is truly iconic, and has terrified generations upon generations of people with her dark green appearance, evil cackle and memorable theme music.

If you told us that the fear on Judy Garland's face was real, we wouldn't be surprised.

So yes, we'd prefer a new Oz film to try to avoid having the Witch, but then you can't really do that can you?

This new interpretation is in the early stages at the moment, so we shouldn't really judge until we've seen a trailer or a poster or something, but still...
