Whether it's the low-budget spooky film you found during a late-night Netflix binge or the star-studded slasher flick you saw in theaters, horror movies just hold a certain appeal for many peopleyou could go for psychological horror, supernatural horror, found footage horror...you get it. And while there are actors and directors that have definitely made their mark on the genre, horror is also welcoming to up-and-comers, and some of the most brilliant horror films of the past decade have been written or directed by first-timers.
And while Halloween might be months away, it's never too early to start planning on which scary movies you want to see next year. So without further ado, here are the most anticipated horror movies of 2020.

The Grudge
The movie that scared you at that sleepover that one time is coming back for a remake. Also titled The Grudge, the movie will be released on January 3, 2020 release, and it will again follow characters as they deal with a house that is cursed by a vengeful ghost.
The Turning
This January 24 release is based on the horror novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. A nanny is hired to take care of two orphans on an estate in Maine, but she soon discovers that the kids, and the house, are harboring some dark secrets.
Gretel & Hansel
We all know that Hansel & Gretel is for kidsGretel & Hansel, however, takes that childhood tale that you know and love and turns the horror level all the way up. Scheduled for a January 31 release, the movie tells the story of a young girl and her little brother as they wander through the forest in search of food and work, only to stumble upon some very evil things.
The Lodge
While The Lodge premiered at Sundance in January 2019, the wide release ended up getting pushed back until February 2020. Starring Riley Keough, the movie follows a woman and her stepchildren as they get trapped in a blizzard in a remote lodge. Terrifying events ensue, of course.
Fantasy Island
Michael Pea will star in this horror adaptation of the popular '70s TV show about a magical island resortbut in this version, the guest's fantasies turn into nightmares. And just in case you were looking for the perfect date night movie, Fantasy Island's February 14 release date will complete your V-Day weekend.
A Quiet Place: Part II
Following the success of 2018's A Quiet Place, John Krasinski will also direct the sequel, and Emily Blunt will reprise her role as Evelyn Abott. Details about the movie's storyline are sparse, but cinematographer Polly Morgan told CNET that the sequel is "more about the children growing up, exploring the world and learning to protect themselves." Part II will be released on March 20.
Antebellum
Expected on April 24, Antebellum focuses on the story of successful author Veronica (played by Janelle Monae), who finds herself trapped in a horrifying, time-bending reality.
UntitledSawSequel
The Organ Donor (a working title) will be the ninth installment of the Saw franchise, but not much is known about this May 25 release. But in an interesting career move, comedian Chris Rock reportedly came up with the idea for The Organ Donor, and he's set to star in and produce the movie.
Candyman
Jordan Peele is back with another film to keep you up at night, and his latest offering is a sequel to the 1992 movie of the same name. The new Candyman will "return to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began," and it'll be out on June 12.
Untitled Purge Sequel
The fifth and final Purge movie is set to hit our screens on July 10, but not much is known about the plot at this time.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
Also known as The Conjuring 3, the movie will follow the first known court case in the USA where a defendant claimed innocence on the basis of being demonically possessed. The film will be released on September 11, and Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will reprise their roles as paranormal investigators and authors Ed and Lorraine Warren.
The Haunting of Bly House
Yes, we know this is technically not a movie, but Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House set social media on fire when it was released in October 2018. Its sequel, The Haunting of Bly Manor, will follow an entirely new storyline with new characters, and it'll be based on The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.
The horror novella "tells the story of a governess hired to look after a pair of siblings. However, several ghosts around their manor house exhibit a supernatural hold over the children." A release date for Bly Manor hasn't been announced yet, but fans are expecting an October drop.
Halloween Kills
Oh, you thought Michael Myers wouldn't be back for more? Halloween Kills will once again follow Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode as she battles with Michael Myers, and another sequel, Halloween Ends, is already scheduled for 2021.
Prior to her 2018 appearance in Halloween, Curtis hadn't reprised her role as Laurie Strode since 2002's Halloween: Resurrection.
