Is There a ‘Monster House’ Sequel? – Newsweek

Fans online got excited overnight as Monster House, the animated kids' film, trended on Twitter, sparking rumors of a sequel.

The 2006 film is about a house that has been taken over by the soul of a vengeful human. Three children from the neighborhood decide to "do battle" with the spirit as it longs to feed on the energy of the living. It featured the voices of actors Steve Buscemi, Nick Cannon, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Kevin James. It took $73,661,010 at the box office and scored 75 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

But as it turns out the film trending on Twitter wasn't to do with the announcement of a sequel.

In fact, model Chrissy Teigen put a tweet out asking for recommendations for good "scary" movies for children. She writes: "What are some good "scary" movies but for kids? Luna [her daughter] loves creepy s***. She loves Coraline but I cannot watch it anymore, I will actually die. The new animated Addams Family doing the trick right now but will need more soon! Yes we are weird."

Twitter did not disappoint Teigen, with fans providing recommendations including Monster House and Paranorman, which was also trending on Twitter. The surge in Monster House recommendations caused the film to trend on Twitter, which sparked the rumors of a sequel.

However, fans were disappointed to learn that their favorite scary movie wasn't getting a sequel.

One user, @dayalegendaryy, tweets: "I expected a Monster House sequel" with an accompanying GIF from the movie saying "Do you want to be eaten alive?"

Another, @roxandiiva, also expressed their dismay: "I saw that Monster House was trending and got excited thinking that there was going to be a sequel. I hyped myself up for nothing."

However, for some Twitter users and fans of the movie, it gave them the opportunity to remember how amazing the film was.

User @botaniccal said: "Was just reminded of how incredible the design of the monster house was."

Another user, @FilmItRick, questioned whether the movie should be touched: "Seeing Monster House trending got me all excited but thinking if we get a sequel would just be impossible because it's just such a great film that shouldn't be touched. But then just seeing the house again would be awesome ughh these are conflicting times we live in."

The movie was also well received by the critics when it was released with The Guardian writing: "One of the best animated movies of the past couple of years and the most enjoyable family entertainment of recent months."

Some of Teigen's fans might be disappointed as she didn't go with Monster House for the film night with her kid: "We went with Insidious. Thanks, guys!"

Talk about a plot twist.

Newsweek has contacted Sony Pictures to inquire about the possibility of a Monster House sequel, and will update this article with any response.
