Baltimore Has The Dirt On Monster Jam – WBAL Radio

You might say that Baltimore has the dirt on Monster Jam!

As the city hosts Monster Jam February 28 through March 1, 90 truckloads of dirt will be dumped inside the Royal Farms Arena. Beth Carter of Feld Entertainment says this is special dirt that has been stored underneath a bridge in Baltimore until it's used for Monster Jam.

How special is the dirt? Joe Urie, the driver of "Zombie" tells WBAL News Radio 1090 and FM 101.5 that the dirt used for the Monster Jam is "crucial" to the competition and Baltimore's dirt is the best he has seen on the circuit.

Urie is in his second year competing in Monster Jam and has already gotten the attention of jam fans when he enters the arena. He says his truck "has these massive arms that come out of the side, and so when I start driving, they start flying around." That's when Urie says, spectators start doing what he calls "Zombie arms," where they put both arms out in front of them and start waving them up and down. Urie says he can get the whole arena doing "Zombie arms" while he is performing the free-style portion of his competition.

Monster Jam visits Baltimore near the end of the circuit. Urie says that means all of the drivers will be pushing hard to get points in the competition.

With the near-tragic crash of NASCAR's Ryan Newman still fresh on the minds of many, Urie says Monster Jam is probably one of the safest motorsports out there. He said drivers are strapped in so tightly with a 6-point harness that only their arms and legs can move.

These days, Urie says Monster Jam markets to all ages. He calls it a complete family event.

Monster Jam takes over the Royal Farms Arena for a Friday night show, two shows on Saturday and a Sunday afternoon show. Tickets start at $30.
