Romero's seminal 1968 horrorNight Of The Living Dead created the modern-day zombie, but the director admitted to being heavily inspired by author Richard Matheson's novel I Am Legend. This featured the last man alive - or so he believes - being surrounded by hordes of vampires. The book was later adapted into a black and white horror movie called The Last Man On Earth starring Vincent Price, and its scenes of mindless ghouls attacking Price's home may have been an influence on Romero too.

The director himself would make a series of zombie classics, including Dawn Of The Dead, but zombies have conquered just about every medium and genre. World War Z is a zombie blockbuster, The Walking Dead was an acclaimed graphic novel before becoming one of the world's biggest shows and Shaun Of The Dead managed to combine gruesome horror with great comedy; Warm Bodies even gave fans a zombie romantic comedy. The hordes have conquered video games too, from Resident Evil to Left 4 Dead.

There's little that hasn't been done with the undead at this point, though Anna And The Apocalypse added a fresh twist. This Scottish horror-comedy is also a musical, with the zombie action broken up by catchy musical numbers. The story centres on the title character, played by Ella Hunt, a schoolgirl who has to team with friends and make it across town to rescue her father during a zombie outbreak - which also threatens to spoil Christmas. Anna And The Apocalypse's various tunes were written by Scottish musicians Roddy Hart and Tommy Reilly and feature such highlights as "Turning My Life Around," which Anna sings while oblivious to the zombie carnage going on around her. The movie was directed by John McPhail, who cited everything from Romero movies to The Breakfast Club and West Side Story as influences on it's wild tone.

Anna And The Apocalypse is a spinoff from the 2011 short Zombie Musicalfrom director Ryan McHenry, who is best known for creating the Vine series Ryan Gosling Won't Eat His Cereal. McHenry died from cancer at the age of only 27 in 2015, and in a nice tribute, Goslingshot a Vine where he made himself some cereal and saluted McHenry with the spoon before taking a bite.
