‘Fear the Walking Dead’: Colman Domingo Teases the Temptation of Victor Strand – Decider

Even when things have hit their lowest on Fear the Walking Dead, Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) is gonna be Victor Strand. And when Season 6 of the series opens up, things have seemingly gotten pretty dire for their group, thanks to having been forcibly integrated into Virginias (Colby Minifie) Pioneers, a fascistic society ruled by her iron fist. Only, of course, Strand doesnt quite see things that way.

The moment he heard of Ginny and what she was doing, and then meeting her, I think that he actually saw a lot of himself in her, Domingo told Decider. Because he had fallen into an ethos and a philosophy of a group of people who were trying to do something that was against his nature, actually.

Since he was first introduced way back in Season 1, Strand has been one of the most enigmatic and morally complex characters on the series. Though weve learned a lot more about the former businessman and current post-apocalyptic con man, and hes even formed bonds with other characters most notably Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), one of the few other Season 1 survivors when the chips are down, Strand always defaults to helping himself; not the group.

Virginia (a.k.a. Ginny) doesnt have exactly the same focus on the surface. She purports to be rebuilding civilization, and working towards the greater goal of fighting back the zombie apocalypse. Only she, like Strand, looks at people as tools to use to build this civilization not as human beings with wants and needs of their own. And for Strand, that focus is alluring.

Shes got jam! Domingo said, laughing. Shes got a hat! Shes got cool hats with jewelry on it! Youre like, who? Shes killing it in the apocalypse. So hes like, You know what? Weve been hungry. Weve been wanderers and vagrants. Weve been hunted down by filthy women. You know what? Maybe Virginia and her gang [are] not so bad.'

And maybe theyre not for Strand. But if the calculating character is making moves to move up in Virginias society, that most likely means hell be coming into conflict with less willing characters, like the left-for-dead Morgan Jones (Lennie James). But on a more logistical, viewer focused level it means good, juicy drama to watch, particularly when it comes to Domingos scenes with the other cast members. Good news on that front, too: a renewed focus for Season 6 finds each episode acting as a sort of done-in-one story (the Fear folks are invoking an anthology to explain how this season is structured), meaning more time for individual characters, a well as digging into the drama between them.

I think Ive always been a one-on-one kind of person anyway, Domingo said. I like the idea that you get to go deeper with them, a fellow actor. A lot of times, youre in these big group scenes where you might get a couple moments. Now, you just get to really play together, and really work off of each other Its almost like being back in the theatre.

If Fear Season 6 is a play at least where Domingos character is concerned, though you might call it The Last Temptation of Victor Strand. Though hes not 100% on Virginias side, the call of her Pioneers will definitely cause some friction.

Hes like, Oh, whoa. Wait, heres somebody whos been doing exactly what I was getting all this hell for! And shes running it, and its doing pretty well,' Domingo said. So I think hes really impressed. Hes like, Holy shit. Low-key, like, Im into all of this. But Im still with this group. Im with this group, and everythings wonderful. But Im low-key really into her.'

Fear the Walking Dead premieres Sunday, October 11 at 9/8c on AMC, and Thursday, October 4 on AMC+.
