There's no doubt that horror is always popular, with manymovies getting even better, the second time someone watches them. However, it is a genre that usually attracts mature audiences for its macabre and traumatic sequences, and therefore, is not recommended as something to watch with the family.

That being said, there are many brilliant horror movies that are perfect for the entire family and can be seen by kids as well. Although it is recommended that everybody researches these movies before showing them to the family, as some might notcomplement the tastes of certain individuals, these movies are highly recommended for any person belonging to any age group.

Coralineis an animated movie that explores the hidden desire of every child to live in a world that is better than the one they are living in, a fantastical utopia of sorts. In this animated horror movie, young Coraline, played by Dakota Fanning, discovers a hidden door in her new home. Behind this door, she finds a mirror world that is exactly similar to the one she inhabits; only better.

While she enjoys this utopian world at first, things soon start becoming grim as her mirror-family attempts to trap her in that world forever.Adapted from a story written by the celebrated author Neil Gaiman,Coralineshows how the young girl must muster all her courage and wits to make her way back to the world she originally belongs to.

What happens when the gothic tale of Frankenstein is adapted into an animated movie for children? You get the masterpiece known asFrankenweenie.Considered by many to beone of the best directors of horror in modern times,Frankenweenieis directed by Tim Burton and features voiceovers by brilliant actors like Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Catherine O' Hara, and Martin Landau.

It follows the story of young Victor Frankenstein who considers himself to be an amateur scientist, and althoughan outcast at school, enjoys the company of his beloved best friend and pet dog Spark. In an attempt to resurrect Spark, after the dog's death, things soon take a turn for the worst whenVictor's experimentgets stolen by fellow students at school. They use it to bring other deceased animals back to life. The only difference being that these animals are not as affable as Spark.

While there are ultra-silly horror movies that actually have good premises,The Spiderwick Chroniclesis a horror movie that has a silly premise but turns out to be a brilliant watch with the family. The movie tells the story of the Grace children, who have recentlyrelocated with their family to a neglected estate that was previously owned by a relative.

When strange things start to take place on the estate's grounds, the family instantaneously suspects it to be the mischief of Jared Grace, the troublemaker amongst the three Grace children. However, the reason behind these happenings is far more mystical and revolves around a book written by Arthur Spiderwick. Starring Seth Rogen as the adorable Hogsqueal, and Freddie Highmore as Jared/Simon Grace, this horror flick is an absolute delight.

The '80s was a brilliant time for the horror genre, with many classic horror movies releasing, which were way ahead of their time. While it seems improbable, even Disney tried their hand at this genre, albeit due to financial issues and in an attempt to experiment and attract new audiences.Something Wicked This Way Comesis one such example that tells the story of a diabolic carnival that traverses from one small town to the other providing the services of making its customer's fantasies a reality for the simple payment of their souls.

When her parents are transformed into huge pigs, Chihirolearns that the park is occupied by supernatural beings and that she has to work there to find a way to free herself from the clutches of these unearthly entities and get her parents back to their original selves.

William Cameron Menzies is undoubtedly one of the best stylists that cinema has ever witnessed, and with his 1953 classic Invaders from Mars, he makes sure that all his capabilities are brought to full light. While the world of cinema does have some of the scariest movies, Invaders from Mars takes the cake as a brilliant horror flick for children.

Detailing the experiences of David Gardner, a young child, who witnesses a U.F.O landing on their backyard, this movie brilliantly depicts the feelings of helplessness and anxiety that most children face against an insurmountable world. Special kudos go out to the movies ending.

While Joe Dante has been widely appreciated for making horror movies like The Howling, Piranha,and Gremlins, The Hole a movie that came out during the latter part of his career has been widely ignored. However, this movie is brilliantly crafted, with masterful imagery and strong characters, courtesy of screenwriter Mark L. Smith who has movies like Overlord and The Revenantunder his belt.

Depicting the story of two brothers who find in their basement, the pathway to Hell, this movie brings out their worst fears to life and makes for an extremely interesting watch.

An absolute cult classic, Ghostbusters is always a brilliant choice of movie to watch with the family and entertains any person from any age group. While there are horror movies that do not deal with the paranormal, Ghostbusters is all about ghosts and the silliness of dealing with them.

Telling the story of a group of scientist friends who lose their university job and then take up the mantle of being protectors from the paranormal (in return for some money of course), this movie is scary as well as hilarious, providing a perfect balance between both.

Roy Rowland, along with some co-writing help from Dr. Seuss himself created a fanciful masterpiece by the name of The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. Being the only movie that Theodor Seuss Giesel has ever worked on, the movie boasts of impeccable costumes and sets, while perfectly depicting the helplessness of childhood.

Starring the iconic actor Hans Conried, as the scheming Dr. Terwilliker, the movie showcases the plight of young Bartholomew Collins, who has traversed to a nightmarish realm and is now being forced to play a gigantic piano by Dr. T, along with 500 other children. Whats worse is that his mother seems to be under the hypnosis of Dr. T.

Tim Burtons Dark Shadows was widely criticized for the comedic approach and overt-melodrama it showcased to bring to the cinemas this adaptation of a popular supernatural soap opera. However, it is these very qualities that make the movie entertaining and fun.

Starring Johnny Depp, an actor who actually made his debut with horror, the movie tells the awakening of a sleeping vampire, Barnabas Collins, who wakes up to find that his progeny has fallen into chaos. Having a stellar castthat includes Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, and Johny Lee Miller amongst others, this movie is a perfect watch for the family; granted that parents might have to consider the fact that the focus on torrid love affairs might prove to be too mature a content for viewing children.
