Monica Rambeau gets her powers from channeling the energy of a sun, making her the most formidable vampire hunter Marvel has ever seen.

There are a number of characters who go by the name of Captain Marvel in superhero comics, and one of them is none other than Monica Rambeau. Monica's power set is different from that of the current Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers, because it is drawn from the energy of a sun. As a result, Monica is able to emit powerful beams of light, fly at the speed of light, and absorb and control various different types of energy. She has gone by many names in the comics, such as Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum, each of which speak to her unique powers.

Not surprisingly, Monica's skillset comes in handy against photosensitive vampires, which writer Reginald Hudlin brought to life inBlack Panther#12-13. On a missionto New Orleans, Louisiana, Black Panther teamed up with Luke Cage, Blade, Brother Voodoo, and Monica to defend the city against a horde of vampires led by Victor Montague. With a creative team rounded out by penciller Scot George Eaton, inker Klaus Janson, colorist Dean White, and letterer Randy Gentile, the city was left devastated in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and it was up to this group of heroes to protect The Big Easy in its greatest hour of need.

While Blade is Marvel's resident vampire hunter, having devoted his life to dispatching bloodsuckers, Monica Rambeau was the team's secret weapon.As readers know,Blade is deft at close combat with his myriad of weapons,but the team needed a more efficient way of destroying Montague's followers. At this point in time in her publication history, Monica was not yet using her powers to their fullest extent. With encouragement from T'Challa, she unleashed a power display of her abilities and truly became the Sun Goddess. Shining through the city, Monica destroyed Montague's vampires and distracted him long enough for Blade to land the killing blow.

Monica's role in saving New Orleans from Montague and the other vampires shows how she could supplement some of Blade's weaknesses as a fighter. While Blade uses an arsenal of weapons against his foes, Monica isher own arsenal. After all, vampires cannot tolerate sunlight, which is the same type of energy that Monica bases her powers from.For all of his expertise and skills, Blade is ultimately just onehero against an endless horde of vampires. Because Monica can fly at the speed of light, as well as emit energy from the sun, she could easily takedown armies of vampires all on her own.

Unfortunately, because Blade prefers to work alone, her and Blade have not teamed up to take down vampires since. While her power set makes her perfect for fighting against vampires, Monica is a formidable hero in any number of contexts, and her versatility has made her an important fixture in the Marvel Universe. Ultimately, this chapter in Black Panther's story shows off T'Challa's skills as a strategist as well as a leader, bringing out a whole new side toMonica Rambeau's powers.
