10 Original Cuts Of Movies That Should Be Unearthed | ScreenRant – Screen Rant

Movies can definitely be ruined by poor post-production decisions, and we'd love to see the rumored alternate cuts of these 10 films.

There's a saying in Hollywood that "a movie is written three times. When the movie's script is written, when the movie's shot, and when the movie's edited." This means that nothing is ever exactly how it is when initially mapped out on paper.

The imminent release of Zack Snyder's Justice Leaguewill soon show the world how much a movie can change from what was originally intended. These changes might be due to poor test screenings, studio interference, or the director's changing creative mind. Sometimes, audiences get to see "director's cuts" released on DVD, and sometimes they're locked away. Believe it or not, like these ten, there are vastly different versions of movies that should be unearthed.

Recently, a movement has begun to release the "Schumacher Cut" ofBatman Forever. The footage for this cut has actually already been released on the film's DVD, but fans would love to see it remastered and edited back into the film.

Originally, the film began with Two-Face escaping from Arkham Asylum, but it was cut to open the movie with an action scene. Also, after Two-Face shoots Bruce, he awakens having forgotten that he's Batman, but he remembers when he confronts a giant bat. The cut is supposedly darkerthan what we eventually got,but Warner Bros. seems to haveno plans to release it, especially after Joel Schumacher's recent passing.

Usually, the biggest differences in original cuts are massive story changes or scenes that are removed or different from the released version. In the case of The Thing, a prequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic, it was the special effects.

The original film is known for its practical effects, so the filmmakers behind the prequel wanted to honor that by having great practical effects as well. However, in post-production, the studio decided to layer CGIover the practicaleffects. TheCGI wasn'tgreat and behind-the-scenes footage has since revealed how cool the original practical effects were.

Since the Snyder Cut announcement, fans have clamoredfor the David AyerSuicide Squadcut. After the release ofBatman V. Superman, Warner Bros. decided totone the movie downand make it more likeGuardians Of The GalaxyandDeadpool, even going so far as to hirea movie trailer company to re-edit the film and add on-screen characterdescriptions.

Jared Leto's Joker didn't fare well in "post," as most of his scenes were removed and his presence in the released film has very little significance to the plot. In addition, many more "squad" members had larger roles. David Ayer has supported the movement and hopes to bring the film to light.

Wes Craven really wanted to branch out from horror movies, so he signed on to direct a thriller called Friend about a girl who is brought back to life using robot parts. However, Craven got cold feet and added in a violent nightmare scene at the end of production.

After that, the studio made him film more violent scenes, and the movie became a horror film. The title was changed to Deadly Friend, and the film lost a lot of character scenes, which is the reason Craven wanted to make it, in the first place.

Often described as The Shining in space, Event Horizon is about a spaceship that, during a spacetime continuum, passes through Hell, thus bringing a deadly entity on board. Director Paul W.S Anderson's first cut was deemed to be too long, so the studio forced him to make another cut... which he deemed too short.

When viewed, audiences can ascertain that an even more horrific film is being concealed by cuts. For years, fans have clamored for the original. After strong video sales, a searchbegan for the missing footage. However, it was discovered the footage was gone forever due to not having been properly stored.

Terence Malick's The Thin Red Lineboasts an all-star cast such as Sean Penn, George Clooney, and John Travolta. However, many more actors shot scenes that were deleted. Bill Pullman and Mickey Rourke filmed scenes that were cut, and actor Adrian Brody showed up to the premiere believing he was the lead because his character was in the source novel.

Brody soon realized his role was reduced to two lines, and, in "post," Malick had reshaped the entire movie around Jim Caviezel's character. Brody felt hurt, and many actors have had similar complaintsaboutMalick with other films. However, the movie is still considered a masterpiece.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller were the originally-announced directors of Solo: A Star Wars Story. However, three weeks before principal photography completed, they were fired and replaced with veteran director Ron Howard, who proceeded to reshoot the entire movie.

Not much is known about the exact differences between the two versions besides Paul Bettany replacing Michael K. Williams as Dryden after he was unable to return for reshoots. Producers didn't like Lord and Miller's more improvisational style of shooting, but, apparently, their goal was to make the film in the vein of Guardians Of The Galaxy.

WhenFantastic Fourwas released, it was a critical and commercial failure. The director, Josh Trank, disowned it, eventweeting that hehadmade a great filmthat was ultimately destroyed by reshoots and further editing.

The released film is strangely paced, as the first partfocuseson the origin story, but, once the group gains their powers, the movie speeds up to a disappointing conclusion. Also, Kate Mara's bad wig denotes which scenes were reshoots. The original version had the "Fantasticar," more story, characterbeats, and scenes present in the trailer that are missing from the truncated, hodgepodge version released in theaters.

Planes, Trains, and Automobilesis the classic John Hughes film starring Steve Martin and John Candy as two miss-match travelers trying to get home for Thanksgiving. The movie runs a tight 90 minutes, but a nearly four-hour cut haslong been rumoredby even Steve Martin himself.

Based on scenes from the trailers and the original script, a much longer movie was shot which saw the two characters getting into more shenanigans andrevealingmore backstory for John Candy's character Del. While many fans would love to see a longer version, the rumor is the missing footage has deteriorated.

Perhaps the holy grail of lost movies is legendary director Orson Welles' 1942 film The Magnificent Ambersons. After a poor test screening, Welles decided to shorten the movie. However, while he was off in Brazil making another movie, the studio decided to cut itwithout him, removing an hour's worth of footage and shooting a happier ending. Welles was furious when he found out. However, the released film is still considered one of the greatest films of all time.

A search for the missing footage has turned up nothing, and it's deduced the footage was destroyed to free up vault space. However, recently, a filmmaker has announced his plans to complete the film using animation.
