Christopher Bernier accepts $255K contract to be Lee …

Christopher Bernier and the Lee County School Board have come to terms on a contract making Bernier the superintendent of Lee schools.

The contract, which has a starting pay of $255,000 per year, is for 2 years. The contract would be extended to 3 years if a proposal to make the Lee superintendent job an elected position is approved.

The state Senate on Thursday gave final legislative approval to a House-passed bill that would give voters the power to elect the Lee superintendent. The bill now goes to Gov. DeSantis. Lee County voters get the final say on the issue.

If signed by the governor, the question of making the superintendent an elected job will go to voters as a referendum on the November ballot.

Final changes to Bernier's proposed contract were made late Tuesday night. The school board held a workshop session during the day to discuss changes requested by Bernier.

He responded to the board's counter-proposal during the evening session, and an agreement was reached.

Bernier has agreed to consult with the district and interim Superintendent Ken Savage prior to assuming the position. The district and Bernier agreed to a $15,000 consulting contract.
