Horror film is shrouded in mystery that leads to horrifying secrets – Uniontown Herald Standard

A mystery unravels during an autopsy in the horror film The Autopsy of Jane Doe on Blu-ray and DVD this week.

In the film father and son coroners, Tommy (Brian Cox, Troy and The Bourne Supremacy) and Austin (Emile Hirsch, Into the Wild and Milk) receive the body of a homicide victim that seems to have no cause of death. As they work to figure out whose body this is they uncover strange clues that are connected to terrifying secrets.

Brian Tallerico, a reviewer for RogerEbert.com, said that while the film is good and entertaining, it still has a few short comings.

Its not uncommon for a horror movie to be more effective in its set-up than its climax.

A whispered boo is much scarier than a scream in your face.

Luckily, that first hour of The Autopsy of Jane Doe is so clever and well-done that it makes the sins of the finale easy to forgive, he wrote.

Donald Clarke of the Irish Times, and also a fan of the film, wrote, Fans of the genre will rejoice in the rare sight of a new kind of threat. They will celebrate further at the directors success in satisfactorily exploiting a challenging premise.

But, not everyone embraced the film.

The second half is merely morbid runaround, punctuating its soundtrack crashes with self-justifying footnotes on historical misogyny, wrote Mike McCahill of the Guardian.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe is rated R for bloody horror violence, unsettling grisly images, graphic nudity and language.

Other films on Blu-ray and DVD this week include:
