The Addams Family (1991)

Con artists plan to fleece an eccentric family using an accomplice who claims to be their long-lost uncle in this hilarious adaptation of the TV series featuring wonderful performances from Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd and Christina Ricci.

The Cabin the Woods (2012)

Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin, where they get more than they bargained for, discovering the truth behind the cabin in the woods. Co-written by Joss Whedon, this amusingly satirizes every horror genre and trope while giving you plenty of creeps onto its own.

Hereditary (2018)

An unpleasant experience on the whole, Ari Asters horror film about loss and grief spirals into one nightmare after another. At times, you sense the genre tropes taking it in one direction, but then it wallops you in the head only to redirect elsewhere. Aster asks just about everything from his lead actress Toni Collette, likely making for a mental and physical creative trial for the ages. The finale is a doozy.

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

When you go to the graveyard to get rid of Jason Voorhees' body once and for all but inadvertently bring him back to life instead. Crack open a Friday the 13th for a classic Halloween horror schlock experience.

Midsommar (2019)

With 2018s instant horror classic Hereditary, we already knew we had something special with writer/director Ari Asters debut, but we had no idea hed follow it up with an even grander and more terrifying sophomore effort just a year later. A deeply grieving woman (a superb Florence Pugh) travels to Sweden to visit a rural hometowns fabled mid-summer festival, as things get weird and violent (and weird) fast. All you really need to know is you will not come out the person as you go into Ari Aster movies moving forward, and that movies are just as if not even more frightening when set in the daytime. Look, we all deal with grief and break-ups differently. Some just do it with bear suits, psychedelic drugs and fire.

The Village (2004)

A series of events tests the beliefs of a small isolated countryside village. Writer/director M. Night Shyamalans criminally underrated meditation of fear and violence deserves a resurgence. Super creepy atmosphere propelled by James Newton Howards gorgeous music and performances from Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix and William Hurt.

Zodiac (2007)

David Finchers cerebral procedural about the Zodiac Killer should help you creep right into Halloween season. Masterfully made and well-acted by the likes of Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo.

Addams Family Values (1993)

30 Days of Night (2007)

Bone Tomahawk (2015)

Childs Play (2019)

Children of the Corn (1984)

Crawl (2019)

Frankenweenie (2012)

When a boys beloved dog passes away suddenly, he attempts to bring the animal back to life through a powerful science experiment. Tim Burtons stop-motion animated feature based on his own Disney short film breathes fun new life into his strange idea.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

This season staple follows a villainous trio of witches, who are inadvertently resurrected by a male teenager as a virgin in Salem, Mass. Starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. The Halloween movie? Theres a reason FreeForm shows it 1,000 times in October.

Mr. Boogedy (1986)

A salesman moves his family into a new house, where they initially dismissing incidents as more of their fathers practical jokes until they learn the house is haunted by people who lived in the house 300 years previously.

The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror (1990-present)

The annual horror anthology episodes typically spoof classic stories, though some original ideas are genuinely scary (but funny, of course).

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad

The Haunted Mansion

Maleficent

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Alien (1979)

In space, no one can hear you scream. After a space merchant vessel receives an unknown transmission as a distress call, one of the crew is attacked by a mysterious life form and they soon realize that its life cycle has merely begun. Ridley Scotts sci-fi/horror classic starring Sigourney Weaver remains one of the greatest of the genre.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

Two American college students on a walking tour of Britain are attacked by a werewolf that none of the locals will admit exists. Many consider this genuinely scary but often funny John Landis sendup their all-time favorite horror movie. At the very least, its an essential if you havent caught up with it yet.

The Blob (1958)

An alien lifeform consumes everything in its path as it grows and grows. An oldie but a ghoulie, er, goody. Starring Steve McQueen.

Contagion (2011)

Steven Soderberghs pandemic thriller depicts the global response when a deadly virus spreads worldwide, killing millions all while there is no cure in sight. A brilliant movie that got nearly everything right about how a pandemic would impact the world.

The Frighteners (1996)

After a tragic car accident that kills his wife, a man discovers he can communicate with the dead to con people. When a demonic spirit appears, he may be the only one who can stop it from killing the living and the dead. Underrated horror fantasy (with some cool effects) from Peter Jackson, with a fun Michael J. Fox playing against type.

Jaws (1975)

Well take the hit if you dont consider this horror, but moviegoers were darn terrified when Steven Spielbergs blockbuster hit theaters, so scared it took many long stretches of time before even thinking of getting into the water again. While certainly more of a pure adventure, the shark sequences offer a masterclass in suspense and cinematic terror, so score one for Spielberg, who could have made any horror flick he wanted after this.

Leprechaun (1993)

An evil, sadistic Leprechaun goes on a killing rampage in search of his beloved pot of gold. Cult classic starring Warwick Davis and Jennifer Aniston spawned several sequels.

Seven (1995)

Two detectives hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives in David Finchers flawless but highly disturbing thriller starring Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow.
