SCANNERS: New HBO Series Based On David Cronenberg’s Head-Popping Horror Movie In The Works – FearHQ

A TV series based on David Cronenberg's '80s sci-fi horror movie Scanners is in the works for HBO, with Emmy award-winning Black Mirror scribe William Bridges on board as writer and showrunner, and Lovecraft Country helmer Yann Demange in the director's chair. Both will exec produce.

The original film focused on a group of people with powerful psychic abilities known as Scanners led by a megalomaniacal man named Revok (Michael Ironside), who wants to use his abilities to control the world. Another scanner, Cameron Vale (Stephen Lack), stands opposed.

The movie features the now iconic "head-exploding" scene, in which Revok uses his powers to obliterate a man's cranium.

It sounds like this series may actually serve as a follow-up, as it's described as "a visceral thriller set in the mind-bending world of Cronenbergs film. It will focus on two women living on the fringes of modern society who are pursued by relentless agents with unimaginable powers and thus must learn to work together to topple a vast conspiracy determined to bring them to heel."

Cronenberg will serve as an executive producer along with Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer of Media Res Studio, and Meredith Duff and Sarah Sullivan of Wayward Films.
