Spring City man admits to series of armed robberies

Like something right out of a horror movie, a Spring City man has admitted to donning a hockey mask and arming himself with a machete-style knife during several armed robberies at businesses in Montgomery and Chester counties.

Dan Mungin, 22, of the 200 block of Bridge Street, pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Court to charges of robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, theft, terroristic threats, simple assault and possessing an instrument of crime in connection with three robberies that occurred in June 2011 at gas stations and convenience stores.

Mungin, who remains in jail without bail, will be sentenced later this year by Judge Joseph A. Smyth. Mungin potentially faces decades in prison on the charges.

Assistant District Attorney Heather Levandoski vowed to seek a lengthy state prison sentence against Mungin.

It was a pretty menacing mask and machete and the person is standing there threatening them, said Levandoski, referring to the fear felt by the store clerks. You see a tall guy coming in with an ominous-looking hockey mask and a machete. I think that would scare pretty much anybody.

Its creepy and it looks like something right out of a horror movie, Levandoski added.

Mungins accomplice, Kyle Weikel, 20, formerly of the 300 block of Gay Street, Royersford, previously was sentenced to two-to-four years in a state correctional facility, to be followed by 10 years probation, after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy-related charges in connection with his role as a getaway driver in the robberies.

An investigation began at 2:41 a.m. June 22, 2011, when according to court documents, Mungin, wearing a red hockey mask and waving a machete-type knife, entered the Sunoco station on Pottstown Pike in South Coventry and demanded money and cigarettes, totaling about $214, from a store clerk before fleeing from the business.

A short time later, at 3:26 a.m., a man wearing a hockey mask entered the 7-Eleven at 301 S. Lewis Road, Limerick, carrying a large knife or sword and approached a clerk, according to an arrest affidavit filed by Limerick Detective Matthew Daywalt. The man, subsequently identified as Mungin, went behind the counter and pointed the knife at the clerk, telling the clerk, give me the money. The clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of money and the robber also stole a display of lighters before fleeing on foot, police said.

At about 4:31 a.m. authorities also investigated a knife-point robbery at the 7-Eleven in the 1900 block of West Main Street in West Norriton, according to court documents. The robber attempted to conceal his face as he stole about $310, according to the arrest affidavit. Continued...
