The Boys favourite Jessie T Usher will be over the moon with the first reactions to his latest movie Smile.

Written and directed by newcomer Parker Finn, this supernatural horror centres on Dr Rose Cotter (13 Reasons Why's Sosie Bacon), who, having bared witness to a traumatic incident, begins to experience nightmarish and inexplicable events.

As this overwhelming mystery takes over her life, Rose is forced to confront a troubled past in order to escape her new reality.

Usher also stars as Trevor in the movie, with a cast that includes Veronica Mars' Kyle Gallner, Neighbours and Reign's Caitlin Stasey, Stranger Things' Rob Morgan, and Scrubs' Judy Reyes.

After Smile's screening at Fantastic Fest this week, social media lit up with stunned reactions.

"#SmileMovie builds the tension up and then hits with a lot of great jump scares. Impressive to see @ParkerJFinn this good on his first feature. And Sosie Bacon's career is only going up up up. @fantasticfest," read one tweet.

Polygon film editor Tasha Robinson went on to add: "Well, I apologise to the guy sitting next to me at SMILE for the *multiple* times I yelped and jumped during the film.

"That is one efficient, hard-hitting horror movie! But there's a really thoughtful core to it that I appreciated a lot. #FantasticFest2022."

"SMILE is gonna f**k people up. Truly. Deeply. F**k. Them. Up. So many terrifying, disturbing images: hardcore horror that doesn't hold back and never flinches," wrote The Black Phone's C Robert Cargill.

The compliments kept arriving too, with ComicBook's Chris Killian even describing the movie as a "spiritual successor to It Follows".

"#SmileMovie is deliciously creepy and features some very inventive scares. Sosie Bacon delivers a powerhouse performance and you'd never guess this was @ParkerJFinn's debut film. Loved it," Chris shared.

"Parker Finn makes his feature directorial debut with #Smile but you wouldn't know it from how he masterfully crafted this film. From sound design to cinematography, he nailed it. The scares are earned, and believe me, there are some great scary moments," and "I have seen #SmileMovie. Sosie Bacon needs serious award consideration. The film is also terrifying. In terms of scares, it is the horror to beat this spooky season," read another pair of reviews.
