An interesting reimagining of the zombie movie, Infection is a prime example of J-horror. Directed by Masayuki Ochiai, it focuses on a poorly managed and underfunded hospital.

In graphic detail, Infection traces the spread of a madness-inducing virus that turns blood into a green ooze, infecting medical staff and patients alike. Dramatic and intense, watching the movie feels like attending a theatrical performance.

Session 9 is a parapsychological low-budget film with a major cult following. It stars David Caruso, Peter Mullan, and Josh Lucas as members of an asbestos removal team tasked with working on an abandoned mental asylum.

As the members of the group suffer from waning sanity, the asylum's dark past rears its ugly head. Throughout the film, ominous audio clips from a former patient's repressed memory therapy sessions are played.

The follow-up to Clive Barker's 1987 Hellraiser, Hellbound begins with protagonist Kirsty Cotton institutionalized after her father's death. Instead of finding emotional relief, Kirsty discovers the lead psychiatrist, Dr. Channard, is obsessed with accessing the world of Pinhead and the Cenobites.

1981's Halloween II picks up where the action of 1978's original stops. After barely surviving the night, Jamie Lee Curtis's character Laurie Strode is taken to the local hospital to recover from her wounds. Despite being shot and falling from a balcony, slasher Michael Myers continues to pursue her.

He cuts the power and disables all the emergency vehicles outside Haddonfield Memorial Hospital before moving from room to room in search of the young woman who turns out to be his sister. Michael's psychiatrist Dr. Loomis isn't far behind him, though.

David Cronenberg's stylized masterpiece stars Jeremy Irons in two roles: Beverly and Elliot Mantle. These twin surgeons are well-respect gynecologists who share most things in life, including women.

After the more reserved Beverly falls for a famous actress, the Mantles' routine is upturned. The movie includes multiple nightmarish hospital scenes that become more and more absurd as the brothers delve into mania.

Samuel Fuller's classic story about a journalist who infiltrates a mental hospital still holds up. Johnny Barrett, played by Peter Breck, thinks he can score a Pulitzer Prize by writing a revelatory piece about an unsolved murder at a mental hospital.

When there's a riot at the hospital, Barrett is restrained and subjected to shock treatments, which propels a mental breakdown.

Adapted partly from a Jack London novel, The Jacket stars Adrien Brody, Keira Knightley, Kris Kristofferson, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Brody plays an Iraq War veteran who is institutionalized after being blamed for a police officer's death.

At the hospital, Brody's character must endure experimental therapies. In order to survive, he learns to project himself out of the hospital, literally traveling through time.
