Why Vincent Price Is Still The Most Iconic Horror Movie Actor – Screen Rant

Vincent Price left a huge legacy inspiring horror, films, and music in so many ways, but why is it that horror has so much love for this iconic actor?

Perhaps the most iconic horror actor of all time, Vincent Price is a legendary name, well-known for his work in the black and white film era and starring in classic favorites like House on Haunted Hill and The Fly. He also frequentlystarred in film adaptations ofEdgar Allen Poes work,including classic favorites likePit and the Pendulum, The Raven, Masque of the Red Death, Spirits of the Dead, and An Evening with Edgar Allen Poe in whichPrice reads aloud four of Poes stories accompanied by music.

A prolific actor with over 200 acting credits, 37 of which are horror films, its clear that Vincent Price is one of the most productive horror actors of all time. From The Invisible Man Returns in 1940 to Dead Heat in 1988, Price starred in horror movies of all types, spanning both the black and white and technicolor eras over a sixty-year acting career.

Vincent Prices signature look and voice have chilled horror audiences for so long that hes become a horror icon, gaining tributes across modern horror movies and remakes of his classic works. But what is it about Price that actually makes him a horror icon, and why does his legacy still have such a profound impact on the horror genre in 2020?

Not only was he a huge influence on the horror genre, but Price also impacted the film industry as a whole, as well as music and television. Vincent Price left a legacy unmatched by nearly any other actor. Starting out as a character actor, he would go on to transcend that label, and touch more media than perhaps any other actor. But what is it about Vincent Price that left such a huge impression on entertainment and media?

Director and writer John Waters (Pink Flamingos, Cry-Baby) perhaps said it best in the incredibly appreciative and heartfelt retrospective he composed for Turner Classic Movies in October of 2013:

One raise of his eyebrow and you knew you were about to be thrilled by a debonair, evil, yet sympathetic villain... I can't imagine these films without Vincent Price in them.

Vincent Price was a huge influence on Tim Burton as well, helping to shape much of the movies that Burton would ultimately release. He even personally appeared in Burton's 1990 movie,Edward Scissorhands, as the Inventor. As a result, it can be said that Prices high-class, yet sinister look and sound had a hand in creating the modern, stylized Tim Burton moviesthat fans know and love.
