It may sound very strange, but there are many people who get relax with a good scary movie. They leave all personal troubles and concerns behind and immerse themselves in the tormented lives of others, their screaming, their careers and end up having a good time.
The adrenaline and tension that is experienced with these films for many is too much and they cannot even look at the screen or have to go to the cinema, but for other people it is their best moment. They scream with the protagonists, cry and shudder during the two hours of film.
Sign up for Disney + and enjoy one of the most extensive catalogs in the streaming scene, with sagas like Star Wars or Marvel.
If you are one of those who needs to experience that tension from time to time, then we propose 10 movies that will take your breath away. The terror, the panic of knowing that something bad is going to happen, but not knowing when; hidden in a tiny room or isolated in the vastness of space, whatever the argument their point of attachment is the stress generated by seeing the protagonists in these situations.
Table of Contents:
The dark has always been a good resource for fear, but the way it is depicted in Blind creates an atmosphere of unequaled anxiety. The protagonist, played by Sandra Bullock, you must protect your family from invisible beings that have invaded the planet, anyone who looks at them will not be able to resist the temptation to commit suicide.
Mixing the myth of Medusa and the intrigue of classics like Alone in the dark, this 2018 film is a frantic flight from the dead without knowing where you are going. The idea of escaping from a danger without being able to see it is really distressing and accompanies us throughout the film. Its director Susanne Bier is based on the novel by Josh Malerman whose cover only allowed the headline to be read in Braille.
Title: BlindlyRelease date: 2018Duration: 124 min.Platform: Netflix
Alien is one of the horror films par excellence, during all these years it has earned a position at the top of the list, not even the most modern ones manage to surpass it. Despite the passage of time, it is very well preserved and new installments about the grossest alien of all time have followed.
Seeing Sigourney Weaver go from one aisle of the ship to another fleeing from the bug makes your whole body shrink, but the film continues to add scenes worth remembering. We do not want to anticipate anything, if you are one of those who have not yet dared to see it, but we assure you that there is no science fiction saga that is scarier so far.
The first installment is still the best of all, although if you like it, you can do a marathon of the eight films that already exist and wait for more to arrive. Not all of them are available on HBO, but the vast majority are.
Title: Alien: the eighth passengerRelease date: 1979Duration: 110 min.Platform: HBO
The silence of space, the stillness and solitude that one breathes up there is one of the effects most described by astronauts who have returned from a walk around the Earth. If you add to this that practically everything that can go wrong ends worse, Gravity is permanent stress.
NASA scientists didnt like this movie very much, they say it gives a very wrong picture of space missions. There are many errors that they find in the technical part of the story, even in the protagonists wardrobe, but this does not prevent that if you are looking to spend an anguished afternoon you should try to see Gravity.
Sandra Bullock is the astronaut whose life is going to be complicated in such a way that every second you lose a little more hope that the film will end with a happy ending, that feeling of stretching your fingers to reach something but never reach not even touching it will haunt you throughout the plot.
Title: GravityRelease date: 2013Duration: 100 min.Platform: Netflix and HBO
The story of Babadook is at first glance a classic horror movie about a monster, but there are many hidden feelings in its plot that make the audience impregnate the anxiety of the protagonist and cannot let go of her until the end of the film .
The fear generated by this film does not come from an ugly creature trying to destroy us, it is the fear of life itself, the terror of powerlessness. The protagonists are a widowed mother and her young son who each night read a story together, it may be fate or simple chance, but one night the little one chooses a book that he hides the traumatic story of Babadook, a mysterious being who promises eternal friendship to anyone who reads his story.
The mothers skepticism turns into concern after a few days when she realizes that Babadook has really settled in to live with them. His house, which seemed his refuge, becomes his worst prison.
Title: BabadookRelease date: 2014Duration: 100 min.Platform: Netflix and Prime Video
More than 30 years hidden in a hole in the wall of your house, unable to leave. It is not known if the role of Higinio or that of his wife Rosa, who has to take care of him during all that time without being able to lead a normal life but having to pretend it, is more stressful.
The outbreak of the Civil War is the trigger for this Spanish film that Beln Cuesta received the Goya for her interpretation of Rosa. Her husband, Antonio de la Torre, spent from 36 to 1969 hiding in his house without daring to go out for fear of the regimes repression.
If during the three months of quarantine that we have lived this 2020 you have felt that the house fell on you, imagine what it would be like to spend more than 30 years of your life locked up without being able to talk to anyone other than your wife, without being able to open the window to breathe fresh air or take a simple walk.
Title: The infinite trenchRelease date: 2019Duration: 200 min.Platform: Netflix
If there is something that can cause anxiety, it is an apocalyptic world, from the comfortable sofas in our homes these films remind us that everything can get worse no matter how badly we see today.
The hole is one of those movies that leaves a bad taste in your mouth, not because of bad but because of how terrifying it would be to live in such a world. The inhabitants of this city, if we can call it that, live enclosed in hundreds of flats, in pairs. To get food, every day a platform travels floor by floor loaded with food. The problem is that The first floors find the platform full, but the last ones never get anything and they run a high risk of dying of hunger, before the end of the month and the floors are drawn again.
This Spanish film was the winner of the Sitges Festival and is a perfect and terrifying reflection of the inequality of the society in which we live, of the chance with which many fall into privileged lives but others seem to be doomed.
Title: The holeRelease date: 2019Duration: 100 min.Platform: Netflix
The stress caused by this film is the consequence of a series of ghostly presences and phenomena that surround Annies family. His daughter Charlie is one of the most mysterious characters and simply with her presence you can already notice how all your hair stands on end.
Nightmares, strange sounds, histrionic conversations, the atmosphere of terror that is generated around the members of this family after the death of the grandmother grows throughout the entire film until leaving you with a racing pulse for several hours knowing that that night you will have a hard time sleeping peacefully.
Tony Colllette and Gabriel Bryme are the parents of this familyBut the one you wont forget is little Milly Shapiro.
Title: HereditaryRelease date: 2018Duration: 200 min.Platform: HBO
Juan Antonio Bayona proposed to make us have the worst time of our lives, especially those who are parents, seeing how a mother tries to save her life and that of her children in a supernatural disaster.
It is a true story of a Spanish family that was caught by a gigantic tsunami on the beaches of Thailand in the middle of Christmas 2004. Naomi Watss won an Oscar for her incredible and harrowing performance. This together with how the tsunami was recreated is already an experience.
Your stomach twists when you see the screams and attempts of the characters to protect each other, some of the scenes in this film are the most tense you have ever seen on a screen. Even the opening scenes of idyllic happiness are not spared because you know it wont last long.
Title: The impossibleRelease date: 2012Duration: 110 min.Platform: Netflix
In Spanish cinema we also have terrifying films in which the protagonists do not stop running until the last minute. This film by Jaume Balaguer and Paco Plaza caused a sensation and also a lot of stress in movie theaters in 2007.
A reporter (Manuela Velasco) and her cameraman are locked in a neighboring building in the suburbs of Barcelona. Around them panic breaks out before a virus that turns humans into cannibals.
Racing, screaming, impossible camera movements reduces tension throughout the film. If you want to be scared and very anxious, we recommend this movie, although we warn that you can also end up a little dizzy, the best thing is that if you like you have a second version with which to continue having a bad time at night.
Title: RECRelease date: 2007Duration: 90 min.Platform: Netflix and Prime Video
We end this list with one more horror movie. If in scary cinema you have always been able to scream at ease, a series of films have established a new trend of silent horror. The panic of not being able to scream, not being able to call for help, barely being able to breathe lasts for the entire hour and a half that lasts A quiet place.
Emily Blunt stars in one of the most horrible childbirths in cinema, alone in a bathtub trying not to make noise because creatures with an extraordinary hearing sense have wiped out almost every human on the planet. If they hear you, they find you, she and her family must take refuge in a farm lost in the forest, living in absolute silence.
Title: A peaceful placeRelease date: 2018Duration: 90 min.Platform: Netflix
