Andy Richter Controls The Universe Season 3: Why The Show Was Cancelled – Screen Rant

Andy Richter Controls The Universe is a cult sitcom from 2002 starring the titular comedian, but here's why it was cancelled before season three.

Here's whyAndy Richter Controls The Universewas cancelled before season 3. Andy Richter is an actor and comedian best known for acting as the sidekick to talk show host Conan O'Brien. This began way back on Late Night With Conan O'Brien in 1993 but Richter opted to leave the show in 2000 to pursue other opportunities. Richter later returned as the host's sidekick during the short run of The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien, before following him to TBS for talk show Conan in 2010.

Following roles in the likes of Scary Movie 2, his first big TV series after leaving Late Night was the titular role in bizarre sitcom Andy Richter Controls The Universe. In the show, Richter is a frustrated writer with a dull office job, but his futile imagination leads him to all kinds of creative daydreams while depicting his work life and interactions with co-workers. This unique format allowed the show to create all kinds of bizarre sequences and gags and it received some great reviews. Conan O'Brien also made a guest appearance as a suitably smarmy new boss in one episode.

Andy Richter Controls The Universe is now something of a cult sitcom, but here's why it didn't make it to a third season.

By the time Andy Richter Controls The Universe's second season had started airing, it had already gained something a cult following. However, there was an air that the show was too unique to last long and its lukewarm ratings didn't help, so the series was cancelled by the end of season 2.

Following the cancellation of Andy Richter Controls The Universe in 2003, its star moved on to movies like the misfiring Ashton Kutcher comedy My Boss's Daughter and Elf. Sadly, his luck with fronting sitcoms didn't improve in the years that followed, with Fox's Quintuplets cancelled after one season in 2005 while the Conan O'Brien co-created Andy Barker, P.I.- where Richter played an accountant tunned private investigator - only lasted six episodes.

The series may have a following and its star is still very active in movies and TV - having most recently appeared in Love, Victor - but the odds of Andy Richter Controls The Universe season 3 coming together are close to zero. There have been no signs of a revival in the years since it ended and it would now be considered a relatively obscure series.

Its pronounced Paw-rick, not Pad-raig. Now thats out of the way, a brief introduction. Padraig has been writing about film online since 2012, when a friend asked if hed like to contribute the occasional review or feature to their site. A part-time hobby soon blossomed into a career when he discovered he really loved writing about movies, TV and video games he even (arguably) had a little bit of talent for it. He has written words for Den of Geek, Collider, The Irish Times and Screen Rant over the years, and can discuss anything from the MCU - where Hawkeye is clearly the best character - to the most obscure cult b-movie gem, and his hot takes often require heat resistant gloves to handle. He's super modern too, so his favorite movies include Jaws, Die Hard, The Thing, Ghostbusters and Batman. He can be found as i_Padds on Twitter making bad puns.
