Fort Mason Flix, the pop-up theater staged in the parking lot at theFort Mason Center for Arts & Culture, announced it will extend its run of drive-in movies with a slate of seasonal programming called Halloween on the Bay.

Following the success of the centers first round of programming, which opened in September and sold-out for the month within 72 hours, the waterfront site plans to host a series of Halloween-themed movies through Nov. 1, featuring titles such as The Exorcist, Poltergeist, Us, Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters.

The reception was so positive. I dont know if it could have gone any better, Nick Kinsey, director of external affairs at Fort Mason, told The Chronicle.

The films at the old Army defense post are shown on the oversize 40-by-20-foot high-definition LED screen mounted to the festival pavilion. Kinsey said its 90 times brighter than a standard movie theater projector, which allows for screenings even during daylight hours.

Along with the scary movies, Fort Mason Flix will partner with San Francisco Opera to present the companys 2008 performance of Donizettis Lucia di Lammermoor, starring French soprano Natalie Dessay, on Oct. 25.

In addition to the drive-in offerings, the center plans to have a pumpkin patch by the Guardsmen volunteer organization from Oct. 22 to 25, and bring back the West Coast Craft Market featuring nearly 50 artists and designer craftspeople for a one-day-only outdoor event on Oct. 31.

Its just something else for people to do, Kinsey said. There are not a lot of Halloween activities in San Francisco this year, so we want to give people opportunities to do safe, responsible activities.

Fort Mason, which is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area under the National Park Service, has put a set of safety measures in place due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, including limiting capacity at each show to ensure a safe distance between vehicles.

Contactless check-in and concessions will also be available, with regular public restroom cleanings and personal protective equipment for the staff.

Visitors will be required to wear masks any time they leave their vehicles.

Kinsey said there are no plans to host live in-person events, such as outdoor concerts and stand-up comedy performances, at the venue at this time.

We are focused on the movies right now, he said. But the health orders are changing and we are still evaluating and trying to determine how we will continue it.
