Oregon Health Authority recommends avoiding trick or treating this Halloween – KDRV

PORTLAND, Ore. The Oregon Health Authority does not recommend traditional trick or treating this Halloween, following earlier CDC guidance on the topic. The agency is instead recommending some alternatives that cut down on the risk of spreading coronavirus.

"People in Oregon are creative, they care about their community and they know its important to celebrate safely," OHA said in a statement. "This year, its more important than ever to put safety first because COVID-19 cases have risen recently and holiday gatherings on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day led to increased case counts."

Door-to-door trick or treating or "trunk or treat" events are high-risk activities with COVID-19 still spreading, the agency said.

Instead, Halloween revelers are recommended to hold an online costume contest, watch a scary movie, carve pumpkins with people in your household, or tour the neighborhood to look at decorated houses.

If you dress up in a costume, be careful to plan a costume that allows you to wear a face covering, said state Health Officer Dr. Dean Sidelinger. Halloween masks will not protect you or others from coronavirus. Wearing a cloth or disposable face mask that fits snugly and covers your mouth and nose is still required while wearing a costume, no matter how scary or silly your costume is.
