The 12 Best Zombie Movies on Netflix – menshealth.com

Warner Bros.

Zombie movies have undergone a real transformation over the years. From the groaning, stumbling past of George Romeros Night of the Living Dead (itself inspired by Richard Mathesons 1954 novel, I Am Legend) to the screeching, sprinting terror of Danny Boyles 28 Days Later (and then later full circle with the 2007 adaptation of I Am Legendwhich well call both vampire and zombie.) Zombies have gotten harder, better, faster, stronger.

But the concept of the zombie hasnt changed all that much. Romero said that zombies represented a peoples reaction to changehow a human contends with the reversal of natures law: all things move toward death. When facing the zombie, the human confronts the unnatural, the eternal. The horror of the zombie film is, therefore, not one of dying; its one of not dying. The irony of zombie cinema is that it makes death less scary, more welcoming. Were scared not when our heros friends and families die, but when they return.

As for why we cant get enough of the zombie genre, well, the answer to that is maybe more grotesque. Its not that we long to stoop above a shopping mall with a sniper rifle and mow down the undeadat least, we hope thats not your IRL fantasy; go buy a video game, you psycho. Its the dissolution we long for, a world where were no longer constrained by class or race or, for you psychos, law. (Also, theres probably some fallacious second amendment reverse justification going on here; umm, why else did London stand no chance in 28 Days Later??)

So whatever your immortal fear or apocalypse kink, here are the best zombie movies to stream on Netflix right now.

1Train to Busan

With the colossal success of Bong Joon-ho's Parasite, western audiences are finally finding the movie treasure trove that is South Korean cinema. Add Train to Busan to the list of amazing creature horror movies coming from the country. Featuring the scariest of zombie forms: zombies that sprint.

2The Evil Dead

It's a cult favorite and one of the most successful independent films, made with only a $400,000 budget. It's also Stephen King endorsed, so ... yeah.

3Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island

It's the cartoon movie that probably haunted your seven-year-old brain's dreams. Guess what? It's still pretty frickin good and still pretty frickin creepy.

4It Comes At Night

Residing in that contemporary genre of "post-horror" (smarter, smaller-budget art house screams), It Comes At Night is less an all out zombie fest and more a meditation of all those things that go bump in the dark, including images of ravenous humans. It's scarier when you can't see them, trust us.

5Bird Box

While Bird Box wasn't able to do with sight what A Quiet Place did with sound (namely, make a scary movie that's actually scary), it's a concept film still worth the watch. Just please don't blindfold yourself and do stupid shit after you're done.

6Cargo

Cargo is just an overall solid post-apocalyptic flick, similar in structure to The Road but without being (quite) as bleak.

7Ravenous

Set in Quebec, this Canadian horror movie hits mostly all the zombie tropes, but in a way that feels fresh. It's also (possibly) an allegory for Quebec politics, giving it that extra layer of interpretation on top of all the decayed human matter.

8The Girl With All the Gifts

"Zombies" are "hungries" in this British film based on Mike Carey's novel of the same name. Another great contemporary take on the genre.

9Ladramas De Almas

Translated to "soul thieves," this Mexican horror slasher is just good bloody fun, as well as a decent period piece on the Mexican civil war.

10Cabin Fever

College students. A cabin. Some flesh eating bacteria. Mayhem. It's a fun and sometimes funny piece of wooded horror.

11Resident Evil: Afterlife

Maybe not as good as the corner-turning scariness of the video game, but this Resident Evil is still a decent action flickeven if it feels like watching someone else playing a super fun arcade game.

12KL Zombie

Okay, this is a weird one and there's a good chance you may find it ridiculous and unwatchable. There's also a chance you'll have a ton of fun watching it at various levels of inebriation. It's one of those movies.
