‘Fear the Walking Dead’: Alycia Debnam-Carey and Maggie Grace on How "The Game Has Changed" in Season 6 – Decider

Fear the Walking Dead returns for Season 6 on Sunday, and everything is different. Okay, fine, not everything: there are still zombies, and most of the main cast from Season 5 is back (though not necessarily better for the wear). But where the past few seasons have found theFear-oes making their own destinies and trying to build back civilization, at the end of Season 5, they gave up.

Specifically, they gave in to the demands of Virginia (Colby Minifie) and her Pioneers, a group of cowboy style settlers who look at their community members as resources, not humans. That means that whoever Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), Althea (Maggie Grace) and the other characters who cant be nicknamed Al were pre-Virginia That doesnt exist anymore.

The game has changed, teased Debnam-Carey to Decider. Were in Virginias world, and were playing by her rules now.

What those rules are, youll have to wait and see. But for Alicia, its safe to say that as one of the few remaining originalFear characters, she wont be playing by Virginias rules for long. Over the course of five seasons, Alicia has survived while the rest of her family has died, often right in front of her. That broke her, at first, before leading to a renewed sense of purpose in Season 5, and a new bond withThe Walking Dead crossover character Morgan Jones (Lennie James). With Morgan thought to be dead, and Virginia in charge, Alicia is very much back to survival mode.

Its not so much trying to survive, it is also trying to survive in what Virginias world is, Debnam-Carey continued. Which seems quite sinister and seems quite calculative. I think thats a big, defining fact for Alicia, and for this season too.

As for Althea, the journalist and sometimes documentary filmmaker as a different view and position in Virginias new world order. Youll find out more about where and what Althea is up to as the anthology take on the series progresses (each episode this season focuses on a different character, or small group), but suffice to say where Alicia is trying to survive, Althea is, as usual, tackling the bigger moral issues at hand.

I mean, shes certainly struggling with how to function within tyranny, Grace said. Each of the characters, theres a spectrum of what concessions they can make. Certainly those that cooperate with Virginia reap the rewards. But clearly, this is not a healthy community or organization. Shes pretty ruthless in her efficiency. Als really struggling with how she can make different choices, and be effective in those choices. If you dont make your check-in at your checkpoint in the allotted time, youre not going to last long. But certainly theres a greater spectrum of choice that she has and has to navigate than the others do.

Fear the Walking Dead premieres Sunday, October 11 at 9/8c on AMC, and Sunday morning on AMC+.
