Here’s The Real Reason That Sasha Sacrificed Herself In The Walking Dead Season 7 Finale – moviepilot.com

In a few months, The Walking Dead's eighth season will premiere, depicting the aftermath of the war which began in the Season 7 finale. The events of the finale left the Alexandria-Safe Zone reeling from yet another casualty, Sasha. Her death took place in the last moments of the episode, which didn't give us much time to dissect the why of her sacrifice.

Sasha's suicide left many of us wondering why she did it, leading most of us to believe that she did it in a last ditch effort to kill Negan, or at least one or two of his soldiers. However, it turns out there was a more complex reason to why Sasha took her own life. #GregNicotero reveals the reason for Sasha's death in the extras segment of the The Walking Dead Season 7 Blu-ray.

According to Nicotero, Sasha was confused about the course of action she should take following Abraham's death. She believed Maggie would be okay taking care of herself, as well as her baby. But when she says as much to Abraham, she realizes it was a huge mistake, at least according to Nicotero. Here's what he had to say:

"Sasha's entire character motivation, everything that she did, she did because of what she said to Abraham: 'Maggie's gotta take care of Maggie.' The minute that she says that, she realizes that it was something that she regrets."

Instead of wasting her time trying to get revenge for Abraham, she should've been trying to help protect the future Abraham was referring to when he said:

"She's carrying the future. It's always for someone else."

Maggie's baby is that future. Abraham understood that any child being born after the apocalypse, most importantly, Maggie's baby, was the only hope they had for the future. He also understood that they'd probably all end up dead anyway, but a child being born in their time carries with it the hope of keeping the human race alive. It's possible he wanted Sasha to come to that resolution, too, so that she would do the right thing and protect that future any way possible, and in the end, she did.

There was no guarantee that Sasha killing herself would do anything to help protect the future Abraham talked about, but turning herself into a walker bomb definitely gave her friends a chance to kill Negan, ensuring the survival of Maggie's baby. And while Sasha's sacrifice may have been in vain, she at least got to go down in a blaze of glory like a warrior should, according to Sasha actress #SonequaMartinGreen:

"To see this warrior have a warrior's death, there's a strange and haunting beauty to it. I can actually still be a soldier in this war!"

Nevertheless, Sasha's death was a heartrending one. We'll likely see more of how her death will affect the story's narrative moving forward when Season 8 returns, exploring how her death will affect her friends. Hopefully, they understand why Sasha did it, so they try just as hard to protect Maggie's child in light of what the child symbolizes.
