Keep hoping, Tom Savini! Those Walking Dead rumors were wrong

Tom Savini's dream to play the ultimate big bad in AMC's The Walking Dead (apart from the zombies, of course) just gained new life.

Just a few days after news leaked that actor John Hawkes (American Gangster, Identity) could be playing the ruthlessly cruel character The Governor on the hit zombie apocalypse series, the actor's publicist Karen Samfilippo, told The Wrap that "John is NOT appearing on The Walking Dead."

Confirmation that the part is still open will be welcomed by fellow actor Tom Savini (Machete, From Dusk Till Dawn), who originally leaked the rumor after being asked if he was still being considered for the part. Savini has been pushing to play the iconic character made famous in the popular graphic novel for more than a year.

"Last time I talked to him about it, when I was in Los Angeles, he said they were going after a name for that part. I said, 'Who?' He said 'John Hawkes'," Savini told Movie Web about a discussion with Walking Dead producter Greg Nicotero, which started this whole series of confusing events. "Every time I see the graphic novel, and I see a picture of The Governor, who looks just like me, I send Greg a picture."

Hey, the facial hair is already a match. All he would need is an eye patch.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on Feb. 12 with the final six episodes of the second season. The series has already been renewed for a super-sized third season of 16 episodes.
