We have seen both walkers and humans killed in some of the most disgusting ways ever filmed across ten seasons of The Walking Dead, and yet we may have never seen anything quite as disturbing as what unfolded last night.

That would be a very particular scene in the Walking Dead midseason premiere that didnot go the way many expected. Alpha brought Negan to the woods, and Negan certainly thought he was about to be executed, his charm finally having run out. And yet, it was the opposite.

Told to strip, he turns around to find thatAlpha has also gotten fully naked, wearing only her skin mask. Confused, Negan is informed that hes a gross dude who gets a fitting reward, a prize for correctly identifying Gamma as the Whisperer mole. I gotta say I love Alphas confidence here, offering herself up as the absolute pinnacle reward you could receive.

Negan, being Negan, the type of guy who would probably hit on a well-shaped tree in the right context, is all about this. Keep in mind this is not cute Alpha, and yes, such a thing exists, as weve seen when she wore a dead girls clothes (and hair) to infiltrate the fair. This is grimy, wearing-the-flesh-of-a-dead-human Alpha, which is quite a different prospect, in addition to her being you know, pure evil.

Again, Negan fully runs with this and seems delighted by the prospect, even telling Alpha to leave her mask on. We are treated to a rare side nudity shot of the both of them that I probably shouldnt post here, but needless to say its a pretty out-there moment for a lot of reasons, namely because The Walking Dead so rarely deals with sex, and also because of who the two parties involved here are.

So, does this throw a wrench in my previous Negan betrays Alpha at the behest of Carol theory? Eh, I dont think so.

While Negan does seem genuinely entranced by the idea of sleeping with mask-on Alpha in the middle of the woods, I think this is still part of his long con, and actually, it means that his infiltration plan is going better than ever. I mean, how much closer can you get to Whisperer leadership if youre quite literally sleeping with the boss?

My guess is that this encounter means Negan has finally earned his skinsuit (we see skin mask Negan in previews for the rest of this season), though I would not be surprised if this development further draws ire from Beta as Negan becomes Alphas new favorite (so far as we know, theres never been anything romantic between Alpha and Beta, but still).

Ultimately, I dont think Negan cares about the Whisperers or Alpha at all and is still there to execute a sleeper agent plan to help end the war. I guess you can debate whether hes doing this of his own volition, or because he was told to by Carol (or Ive heard Aaron or Daryl as other possibilities of who let him out of his cell originally), but I still think thats where were going here.

I liked this development because it was just so weird and unexpected, and yet it also made total sense with Negan and Alphas characters. I still think Negan will get his redemption arc at the end of all this, but hes probably going to remain embedded for a while longer. And now he definitely knows how to get alone time with Alpha
