The Walking Dead: First 10 Major Characters Who Died (In The Comics) – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Fans of The Walking Dead television series have learned quickly that anyone can die at any time. Do they recall the first ten big deaths?

Fans ofThe Walking Dead television series have learned quickly that anyone can die at any time in the series. However, fans of the comics have known this to be true since the start as the first volume of collected issues featured three prominent deaths of major characters, and things just got worse as time went on.

By the timeThe Walking Dead comics ended with issue #193, even the biggest and more important heroes have died. However, what keeps the TV show fresh is that it doesn't kill the same characters in the same ways, and there are even some characters who died in the seriesbut lived in The Walking Dead comics.

The first major death that happened occurred in the first collection ofThe Walking Dead comics. Out of the fire three deaths, all of which occurred in the comic book series's first six issues, Amy's was the most heartbreaking. She was innocent and was traveling with her sister Andrea.

When the walker bit Amy, it was her own sister that was forced to put her down, and it ruined Andrea for a while. The same thing happened on the TV show, but in the comics, Andrea recovered and became the comic book's version of Carol.

Jim was the next major character to die. His death, much like Amy's, was almost exactly as it happened on the TV show. In his death, he was part of the group's fight for survival when the zombies raided the group's camp in Atlanta.

Jim had watched his entire family die, and he was the last to go, but at least before he died, he attacked a walker, yelling at it for killing his family, getting some closure before getting bit. The survivors left him behind to change after hiseventual death.

One of the biggest differences inThe Walking Dead TV show was what happened with Shane. In the TV show, he lasted into the second season and then became so dangerous that Rick took him out and shot him, killing his former best friend before he could hurt anyone.

However, in the comics, Shane was dead within the first six issues, and it wasn't Rick who killed him. Shane decided Rick was getting in his way of loving Lori and leading the group and tried to kill his friend. However, Carl showed up and killed Shane to save his dad.

In the TV show, Shane lasted until the second season, and a new character that never existed in the comics in Daryl was the tough sidekick for Rick Grimes. This meant there was no room for Tyreese at the time, as that was the role he played. Instead, the show brought him in later as a somewhat pacifist.

In the comics, he was more like Daryl and was there to fight alongside Rick. However, he also had a daughter he was traveling with named Julie and her boyfriend, Chris. Tyreese lost it when Chris and Julie decided to undertake a suicide pact, but after Julie died, Chrisbacked out and refusedto take his own life.

Up until the 15th issue of The Walking Dead, most of the deaths had been shocking and horrific, but nothing could prepare readers for what Robert Kirkman had planned next. It is clear why The Walking Dead TV series chose to ignore this part of the story.

While inside the prison, the survivors met some prisoners and didn't know if they could trust them. The fear was justified when they found the bodies of Susie and Rachel Greene, Hershel's kids, and Maggie's younger siblings.

Carol was very different inThe Walking Dead comic books. When looking back, it is clear that the TV show flipped Carol and Andrea's overall story arcs despite both women starting in the same place in the comics.

Instead of becoming a strong, butt-kicking survivor in the TV show, Carol became needy and depressed beyond saving. It was even worse than Andrea in the TV show. In the prison, she asked Lori if she could marry Rick, too, so the three could be a family. When rejected, Carol walked to a zombie and let it bite and kill her.

OnThe Walking Dead TV show, The Governor attacked the prison, and he had a hostage he was threatening to kill. It was Maggie's dad, Hershel. In one of the show's mostheartbreaking moments, The Governor cut off Hershel's head in front of his family. In the comics, it was different.

In the comics, it was Tyreese in issue #46 that was at The Governor's mercy. When Rick chose not to give in to his demands, he took out Michonne's katana and cut off Tyreese's head to show he meant business.

The most shocking death early on inThe Walking Dead came with Lori Grimes, Rick's wife, who he had fought to protect the entire series. What made it even more horrific was that she had just given birth to their baby, Judith.

In the TV show, Lori died giving birth, and Judith has grown into a capable young girl. In the comics, they were running from the Governor's attack, andLoriwas gunned down while trying to protect her baby.

Hershel Greene watched almost his entire family die. Despite this, he remained a positive man who was still there to protect his remaining family members, including daughter Maggie.

In the TV show, it was Hershel who The Governor made an example of with a decapitation. When that ended up as Tyreese, Hershel seemed safe, but it was just a fate delayed. The Governor still killed Hershelby gunshot in issue #48.

Unless readers count Shane as a Big Bad, the first real Big Bad forThe Walking Dead was Brian Blake, The Governor. He killed three people on this list on his own, so it is almost right that the 10th major character to die in the comic book series was The Governor.

He took the fight to the prison, both to take the prison and get revenge on Michonne foran earlier confrontation in the series. In The Walking Dead issue #48, one of his own people in Lilly Caul shot him in the back and shoved him into a horde of walkers.
