‘Legacies’ Boss: There Are "Many More Stories to Tell" in the ‘Vampire Diaries’ Universe – Decider

This Thursday (June 16),Legacies ends its four season run on The CW; and with it, so ends 13 continuous years of shows that started withThe Vampire Diaries, continued withThe Originals, and then on toLegacies. But like any good supernatural creature, theTVD universe is only dead for now.

The Vampire Diaries universe is still rich and large and I would doubt to say thats over, Brett Matthews, showrunner for Legacies, told Decider during a wider ranging conversation about the end of the series. I think there will definitely be more shows in that franchise.

Based on the series of books by J.L. Smith,The Vampire Diaries was developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, and launched on The CW in September of 2009. The show, a heady mix of soap opera love triangles, supernatural mysteries, and wildly engaging plot twists, it launched multiple careers and ran for eight seasons. The Originals was decidedly darker and often more serious, focusing on a family of the original vampires and other supernatural creatures first introduced on TVD, and transposed the location from Mystic Falls, Virginia to New Orleans. It ran five seasons, and after it ended, later that year, the more youth-skewing, school-set Legacies (which brought the action back to Mystic Falls) premiered.

For fans who have been following the shows for well over a decade, the abrupt cancellation ofLegacies last month, along with a slew of other CW shows, was a hard blow to take. Though CW boss Mark Pedowitz did take strides to ask bubble shows to make their season finales also work as series finales if the worst happened,Legacies seemed to have the added weight of wrapping up an entire universe.

Happily, according to Matthews, thats not necessarily so. Though there are no specific plans to be announced at this time, the braintrust behind the television iteration ofTVD have already been discussing new possibilities.

Its a hugely important franchise to a lot of people, Matthews continued. I dont know what form or fashion that will take other than things that Julie, and Kevin and I have discussed in the run up to all of this, but I sure would hope that the franchise would not end, and believe that there are many, many more stories to tell, many more tones to tell, many more things to do.

Thats the good news. The bad news is that the fate ofLegacies, which has seen an ongoing fan campaign to get a fifth season picked up at another network or streaming service, may be running out of time. Though Matthews deferred the question of what fans can do to get the show picked up again to executives at the network or studio, he did note that, The problem youd generally run into is, cast starts taking other jobs and it becomes impossible at a certain point. So if there were anything to happen on that front, it would have to happen really quickly.

For his part, he seems to be relatively settled in this possibility, as both the cast and crew move on to other jobs, or looking for their next one. An ensemble like ours, it obviously becomes really tough to lose several key crew members and it all becomes very difficult, Matthews added. So I would say that the outlook on [a renewal] is pretty grim, though Id love to do that.

The series finale of Legacies airs Thursday at 9/8c on The CW.
